Pop-up flashes on DSLRs are great, but they do frequently have hot spots and cast rather harsh shadows on the subject. This diffuser takes the light from your pop-up flash and softens it substantially, allowing for much more flattering photos illuminted with your pop-up flash. Softening the light is really useful for portrait photography, and eBay sellers will find it invaluable for creating more flattering photos of their items.
The mount slots right into the hot shoe of most DSLRs (it may need a little shaving with a razor blade if the fit is too tight for your hot shoe), lining up perfectly with your flash. You can then fit the blue, orange or white diffuser at different heights to ensure it is centred correctly and use your camera as normal from then on. In my experience, when using the diffuser don't look at the back of it when you're taking photos, when the blash bounces off it it gets bright, and you probably don't want to try and take portraits with a bright sqaure of light in the middle of your vision.
