Tips for use

  • There's no hard rules when it comes to creative prism filters, if you're happy with the images, then you're probably doing it right!
  • Generally speaking, people usually work at wider apertures (f2.8 and similar) when using a filter like this as it smooths out the transition from the "normal" part of the image to the curved section and also blurs the warped sections more. Aura is a filter where you can get pleasing results at higher apertures though (in my opinion) so have a play around and see what works with different situations and lighting setups.
  • Thick glass like this can confuse AF systems. Either set an AF point on your camera and work around that, or compose your photo and half-press the shutter then quickly put the filter in front of the lens before taking the shot. Always try to focus through the flat part of the filter, if you use the angled surface it's going to be much harder work.
  • With Aura having some hard lights in the curvy part of the image works really well, which is partly why this filter is so popular with gig photographers. Contrasting colours work really well too.
