The popular Aura filter originally designed by Spektrem Effects back in 2021 has evolved again, in the form of a split handheld version.

The Aura filter loves a bit of contrasting colour in the frame, especially if that's coming from a light source. The sample images were taken with the screw-in version of this filter (I'll update them soon), but as it's the same shape filter you can expect the same results using a handheld version, except with the ability to move the flat centre spot around the frame.

  • 73mm wide glass
  • 50mm removable handle
  • Mountable filter. Both the handle and the filter frame have a standard tripod mount screw-thread built into their bases.
  • Supplied with a protective, padded pouch and a lens cloth.
  • Also available as a screw-in filter (see related items).
  • Size: 77mm wide x 96mm tall.

Tips for using the filter

As ever with creative filters like this, there is no "correct" way to use it. If you like the photos, you're using it the right way.

That said, personally I recommend using most of Rigu's filters wider apertures (f2.8 and below) and usually with a typical portrait focal length (35mm-70mm), especially when you're starting out so you can get used to working with an unusual filter like this. Once you've got to grips with it then you can start playing around and seeing what works for you and what you like.

Thick glass filters like this can often trip up AF systems on cameras since they are warping and blurring the image. When I'm shooting with filters like this I will either set a small AF area on one side of the lens and then use the filter on the other,

Please note, it is not recommended to take this filter in carry-on luggage on a plane. You are likely to have it confiscated by security.
